Emily's Story

"Our family came to the Madison YMCA looking for an affordable summer care option. As a single mother of two, I needed to find a place that offered extended hours to cover my work schedule and the ability to accommodate my special needs son. I also needed fit within a tight budget (but I didn't want to compromise quality of care). The YMCA met all those requirements and then some.

The day camp program is designed to keep the kids active and moving, which is a great alternative to sitting at home in front of television and computer screens. Weekly trips to the Outdoor YMCA for swimming and a special field trip (Waldameer Park, Splash Lagoon, Fun N’Stuff are among a few of the places they visited) kept the kids excited about going every day. The day campers are encouraged and rewarded for positive behaviors and acts of kindness. The Madison Library even came once a week to encourage summer reading. There was always something going on. My kids absolutely loved it, and I loved hearing them tell about their daily adventures.

The day camp staff was really great, too. The directors and counselors took the time to get to know each child and their families. My kids felt safe and comfortable at day camp and I went to work each day knowing they were in capable hands. The staff was happy to answer any questions or concerns and they were always willing to do their best to accommodate special needs or requests. My son has heart disease and epilepsy – the staff was educated on his conditions and how to provide him with emergency care. But more than that, the staff learned how include him in everything, and he was never left out. That’s a huge thing for a kid with disabilities and something for which I’m most sincerely thankful."
