Cindy's Story

Cindy has experienced many challenges in her life, starting when she was seriously injured in a bike accident at 10 years old. By 17 years old, she was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis and needed a series of 9 joint replacements over the ensuing years.

Cindy has lived in Madison most of her life. In 1997, Cindy and her family joined the East End Y.  Her two children got involved in Y sports and swim programs. In 2003 her life took another twist, when her husband suddenly passed away at the age of 36. The lyrics from a Martina McBride song helped to inspire her to keep going. "Hanging on when you feel like giving up" and "Giving more when you feel like giving up" are the two lines that helped her cope with the many challenges that she has faced.

When her children became adults, she finally had time to focus on herself. She rejoined the Y about 3 years ago and started working out 5 days a week. Cindy then found herself facing another serious challenge after being diagnosed with breast cancer. After surgery and several months of treatments, she received good news. She was cancer free!  Medical issues continued to plague her and she recently has had additional surgeries on her knees.

Cindy returned to the Y more determined than ever. "I want to get back into shape and lose weight. I want to get back to the weight I was when I was younger."  Cindy comes to the pool every chance she gets to swim or to take water fitness classes. She also works out in the fitness room several times a week. She even completed the Ironman Challenge the Y offered.  Cindy said, "Giving up is not an option for me. Nothing is going to happen if you sit at home all day. I want to be there for my grandchildren."

Cindy already has lost weight and feels better every day. She wants to be an inspiration to others and hopes that even one person will take steps to improve their life when they see what she has been able to accomplish.  The Y is more than a fitness center to Cindy. It’s a place that supports and encourages her. The Y provides wonderful opportunities for her to socialize with people while challenging her to work towards a healthier life.#BeCauseY
