Day Camp Counselor

The Lake County YMCA is seeking Day Camp Counselors for the Central YMCA in Painesville and East End YMCA in Madison. This is a part-time, non-exempt position. 

Monday - Friday, Times Will Vary, Approximately 35 to 40 Hours Per Week

Training Starts May 10th and will be held in the evenings and on weekends

  1. Provides leadership to and supervises a group of children.
  2. Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values. Meets all deadlines for required certifications and weekly lesson plans.
  3. Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  4. Attends staff meetings and trainings.
  5. Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  6. May supervise teen leaders/ junior counselors.
  7. May participate in overnight camping.


  1. At least 18 years of age.
  2. High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
  3. Previous experience working with children preferably in a day camp setting.
  4. Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
  5. Completes required Y provided training/certification within 30 days of hire: CPR, First Aid and Child Abuse Prevention.
  6. Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.


  • Medium work. Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
  • Frequently subject to environmental conditions and unstable surfaces. Activities occur mostly outside. Standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, and crouching frequently throughout the work shift. Use hands and fingers for fine motor skills frequently. Walking throughout the classroom, facility, property and ability to climb stairs frequently.
  • Have visual acuity to determine safety, security and cleanliness of participants in the program as well as the facility. Receive detailed information through sound as well as express through spoken word.
  • Read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents.
