Instructs personal training appointments in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. Interacts with members to help them in achieving their health and well-being goals. Trains in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement.


The Lake County YMCA is seeking a Personal Trainer, at the East End Y in Madison. This is a part time non-exempt position. The job description and qualifications are listed below.   1. Trains assigned members in support of their desired behavior change. Regularly checks on members’ progress in meeting personal and program goals.
  2. Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational sessions. Instructs lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having/ following prepared plans accordingly.
  3. Conducts interviews to understand members’ definition of well-being, personal goals, cultural background, healthcare needs, diverse abilities and interests and develops plans to meet their individual needs.
  4. Answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and well-being. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  5. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA. Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants.
  6. Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture. Creates a safe environment where all individuals feel welcomed and respected.
  7. Handles and resolves incidents and hazardous conditions and informs supervisor of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
  1. National certification in personal training (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) or YMCA Strength & Conditioning Instructor Certification.
  2. Certification in areas of expertise.
  3. At least one year of experience personal training or wellness coaching preferred.
  • Frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • The worker is subject to noise. There is enough noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
  1. Stand, sitting, stooping, kneeling, and crouching frequently throughout the work shift.
  2. Squatting, jumping, running, balancing, lifting and repetitive motion may be needed depending on group exercise style/ type.
  3. Walk throughout the facility frequently and may need to climb stairs occasionally.
  4. Have visual acuity to determine safety, security and assessment of participant’s movements.
  5. Receive detailed information through sound as well as express through spoken word.
