Lifeguard Coordinator

Supervises Lifeguards and program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives for Aquatic Safety.


The Lake County YMCA is seeking a lifeguard coordinator for the Central Y in Painesville. This is a part-time variable hour position. The job description and qualifications are listed below.   1. Trains, develops and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Assists Program Director with reviews and evaluating staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
    • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
    • Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
    • Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
    • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  2. Ensures records or staff certifications are current and complete.
  3. Schedules and leads Lifeguard classes, Lifeguard In-service training and performs Lifeguard audits regularly.
  4. Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  5. Adjust the lifeguard schedule as needed.
  6. Steps in to cover on an as-needed basis.
  7. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
  8. Performs chemical testing and pool maintenance when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.


  1. Minimum age of 21.
  2. Certifications: current YMCA Lifeguard Instructor, or equivalent, including Lifeguard, Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration
  3. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  4. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.


  1. Ability to pass the lifeguard water test.
  2. Must be able to remain alert.
  3. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  4. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  5. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  6. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  7. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and
    loud situations.
